Now for a question for speed (Don't worry lah, i was lying about the traffic police part :P):
1. "Harry Potter walked from Gringotts to Hogwarts at an average speed of 4km/h, and walked back by the same route at 3 km/h. What was his average speed for the whole trip?"
Hint: The answer is not found by checking out the average of 3 and 4 (if you do it i WILL call the police ah)!
P.S. Contrary to popular belief by people who watched the Harry Potter movie, Harry was NOT walking with Cho Chang (!!!).
Mr Fong have heard from some patrons of his soccer clinic tuition class that they love the Whole Numbers question, so NAHHHH,Mr Fong give you one more!
2. 997 - 996 - 995 + 994 + 993 - 992 + 991 - 990 - 989 +988 + 987 - 986 + ... + 7 - 6 - 5 + 4 + 3 - 2 + 1 =????
Hope it is hard enough :D
Make a mental note: Mr Fong has highlighted Speed as a threatening topic that promises to deter you from your aim to score The Goal Called A*, and hence will publish more Speed questions.
Why is Speed so dangerous? Because it can KILL you know! (oops) it can take up to 5 marks, and if you do not visualize the problem aptly enough, you are dead (no pun intended)!

Hello again... Here to solve ur maths questions! (No I dint refer to my file I kept ages ago)
Q1: travelling 1 way there at 4km/h and then the other way at 3km/h. Definitely by proportions you can say going there to coming back ratio (time) is 3:4 (an inverse of their speeds)
Hence, total distance travelled: 7 units
Travelling there, 4km/h * 3 units = 12 unit km/h
Coming back takes: 3km/h * 4 units = 12 unit km/h
Avg speed thus: (12+12)/7
= 24/7 km/h (nice answer eh?) or in decimals:
3.428571429 km/h (rounded to the nearest 10 significant figures)
scientifically,
3.4 km/h (2 sig fig)
2nd Qn:
find the pattern!
it is basically "+ - ++ --" (this is in ascending order, meaning +1 -2 +3 +4 -5 -6...) and this unit repeats itself.
so, just find:
1+7+13+19....+997= a
-2-8-14-20....-992= b
3+9+15+21....+993 = c
4+10+16+22....+994 = d
-5-11-17-23...-995 = e
-6-12-18-24...-996 = f
and then take a+b+c+d+e+f
to find a, there are 167 numbers in that sequence, so take
(166/2)*(991+1) +997 = 83333
b to f all have only 166 numbers, so:
83 * -994 = -82502
83 * 996 = 82668
83 * 998 = 82834
83 * -1000 = -83000
83 * -1002 = -83166
taking the summation:
83333-82502+82668+82834-83000-83166 = 167
thats the final answer! Rejoice!
